Beth Kanell, author of three YA and middle-grade adventures framed within demanding historiography, shows how students claim their own history. Using images from hometowns, Beth’s projects engage students in critical evaluation of their history. Using character and plot techniques, she shows how to establish the second and third strands that form a braid for driving writing and research. Realizing changes in how local, state, and national issues are framed is exhilarating and nurtures student-driven work.
