Tropical Storm Irene brought torrential rains in August 2011 damaging the water intake for Rutland City Water Filtration Plant preventing the city reservoir from being replenished. Students in the RHS Freshman Academy Earth Science class used the engineering design process (EDP) to research, design, and create dams that could potentially protect the intake area from future flooding events. Skills included map reading, watershed calculations, soil permeability and porosity tests, 3D drawing, and web page design.
