A is for Allen Brook: A Collaborative Research Project
Do you really have time to take on another project? Well, this one is worthwhile. This collaborative project between a teacher and a librarian is place-based and meaningful to everyone involved. It utilizes many digital tools, such as iPads and cameras to support the research while presenting the final project in google sites and storyjumper.com.
Using the alphabet as a guiding structure, the students researched various places and people around their school using differentiated materials.
This project included parents helping the students through the writing process. This was also student-driven. The students took their own pictures and conducted interviews of school staff, using iPads to record. All children were successful writing their report as topics and tools were chosen by interest and ability. The final project is a book through storyjumper.com, both in print and digital form. A Google site holds all research videos, reports and photos, including the children reading their reports.

Under the Radar: TL Job Descriptions and Evaluations
How are you evaluated as a professional in your school? Do you even have a job description? Do your administrators have any idea about all the hats you wear as the school library media specialist? These are questions that deserve answers, if we want to leverage the need for a teacher librarian position in schools. Without a job description, or an evaluation system that reflects the many layers of your job, you are missing an opportunity to have conversations with your principal or other administrators that reveal your contribution to the educational community-students, colleagues, and parents.

The many topics that fall under the umbrella of Digital Citizenship permeate everything we do. They impact our work with students, all of our lives and interactions, and it is critical that we work together to regularly inform and educate our colleagues and our students about these topics. Is Educational Technology Living Up to the Promise of Mindstorms? (Will the Maker Movement Push Constructivism to the Next Level?)
In 1980, Seymour Papert wrote Mindstorms. He used the term, “Bricolage,” to describe an activity that mashes together different technologies, trying, failing, and re-trying until something interesting results. In a 2011 TED Talk, Dale Dougherty, the founder of Make Magazine, says we are all makers. Makers are all about the tinkering. Making is bricolage revisited with new technologies. This talk reinterprets the vision in Mindstorms by applying it to the process of making to learn.

Time For Change
High School can be a time in a teen's life of becoming and individual with a sense of identity, convictions, and spirit. This is essential to stand out in today's society where students graduate from college often with too many competitors for landing a successful career. As teachers we are responsible for helping students discover their own beliefs and helping them to become citizens and learners that will flourish in today's word. Developing an opinion means taking a stand and one help we can give our students is the ability to effectively and powerfully communicate their opinions in a way that will make a positive impact on society. Giving them the chance to present though digital media story telling has covers a broad spectrum of learning. It gives students the opportunity to practice writing, learn about and use technology, present a mind changing idea, and communicate in a way that is effective in 21st century learning.

Creative Partnerships with Professionals.
Seven students from Stafford Technical Center worked with local Graphic Designer Dave Townsend to create a brochure and website for the school. Students came up with the design, did research, took photos, gathered information and created. These students will present their process and talk about what kind of learning was integrated into a true project based experience. Their teacher, Karen Kysar will discuss the partnership and process of bringing a professional into the learning environment. It was an amazing experience!

Design it, Engineer it, Make it: Bringing the Maker Movement to High School
The Maker Movement has the lofty goal of making everyone view themselves as makers. While many would scoff at this, the Next Generation Science Standards task us with that very responsibility. One way we're doing this at SBHS is with a class that introduces students to a design process, presents lessons on electronics and working with materials, and supports them as they produce innovative products. SBHS students will show you inventions that will amaze you.

Discovering People, Places, Landscapes, Environment, and Time Through Archaeological Collections
The Vermont State Archaeologist uses hands-on student engagement with archaeological objects to learn about Vermont’s people, places, landscapes, and environments across time. The new Vermont Archaeology Heritage Center in Barre contains 2,000 boxes of artifacts and other materials (i.e. animal bone) recovered by archaeologists from Vermont archaeological sites. The collections span over 12,000 years of Vermont’s human, landscape, and environmental history and provide amazing physical links to that very long span of time.
